Program Note
Children grow up believing in fairy tales. Is it that easily achieved and forever kept? How come the witch always has to die so pathetically? For little girl, Dodo who can′t walk, fairy tales are always full of mystery. When her father reads the fairy tales, she takes in the story from the side of the witch and the bad guys. Soon after, Dodo is able to walk on her own two feet after undergoing surgery and she falls into the hobby of collecting shoes. Following the orders of the fairy tale books, Dodo becomes a grownup, meets her prince and gets married, thinking she has happiness forever. However, happiness doesn′t last very long and she loses her feet in an accident. She now goes on a path different from the fairy tales. Thanks to the director′s presentation and style that created Dodo′s search for happiness into a fairy tale, the process of finding the meaning of happiness and the biased view of children′s picture books are all the more enjoyable and do not seem so cold-hearted. Director Yunchan Lee first recreated a fairy tale world through computer graphics and sets and then, he portrays the growth of the main female leading character, Dodo, as she actively searches for her happiness inside that world. The Shoe Fairy is a critical approach on fairy tales as well as being a delightful picture book that adjusts our fantasies about fairy tales. (Kwon Yong-min)
