ACFM Holds First Integrated Awards Ceremony Results Announced Across 17 Categories

- Awards across ACF, BSM, InnoAsia, Doc Square and APM brought together, with support worth KRW 480 million

- Goldfish wins three awards and A Chronicle of Minor Things (working title) wins two as the ceremony spotlights artistic merit, social impact and scalability

The Asian Contents & Film Market (ACFM), the official market of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF), held its first integrated ACFM Awards Ceremony on 13 October at Event Room A, Exhibition Center 2, BEXCO in Busan. The ceremony announced this year’s award recipients and support allocations.

ACFM introduced the integrated awards framework this year to bring together the market’s business achievements and outstanding projects. Across 17 categories spanning the Asian Cinema Fund (ACF), Busan Story Market (BSM), InnoAsia, Doc Square and Asian Project Market (APM), the framework provided approximately KRW 480 million in cash prizes, production and post-production support, and invitations to international industry events.

ACFM Director Ellen Y.D. Kim said, “Today’s awards recognize the promise of these projects and the stories they have yet to bring to life. ACFM’s awards do not end in Busan. They travel on to Jakarta, Manila, Oslo and Bangkok.”

She added, “To those whose names were not called today, I hope the conversations you had and the partners you met here will be your starting point tomorrow. To all our winners, we look forward to welcoming you back to Busan with your finished films and works.”

Bringing Projects to Life and Taking IP to Global Markets
ACF Co-Production Support Fund and BSM JAFF Market IP Connection Award

The ceremony also recognized the three international co-production projects involving Korea that were announced in August as recipients of the ACF Co-Production Support Fund. Director Fukada Koji’s Grateful will receive KRW 60 million, while director Jakrawal Nilthamrong’s Rhizome and director Boo Junfeng’s TRINITY will each receive KRW 40 million. Total support amounts to KRW 140 million.

The BSM JAFF Market IP Connection Award went to My Upstairs Neighbors from CLAYHOUSE INC. and Friend Request from RYOUNG STUDIO. Both titles will be officially invited to JAFF IP Connection at Indonesia’s Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival.

My Upstairs Neighbors was recognized for its strong book sales and feel-good story, which give it the potential to reach global audiences. Friend Request has expanded its IP through webtoon distribution and was recognized for its strong fan base in Indonesia and RYOUNG STUDIO’s established presence in the country.

From Artistic Merit to Social Change
IMPACT Asia Award and Newstapa Award

At the Documentary WIP Showcase, Doc Square announced the recipients of the newly established IMPACT Asia Award and Newstapa Award.

The IMPACT Asia Award went to three projects: director Ma Chi Hang’s Moon is Watching You, director Jang Minkyung’s Our Waves, and co-directors Yang Nan and He Peiyun’s Restless Farewell. Each project will receive USD 5,000. The jury considered the projects’ artistic merit, potential for meaningful social and political change, and the promise of their impact plans.

Moon is Watching You was recognized for its poetic construction, the filmmaking team’s long-term commitment despite personal risk, demonstrated community support, and plans to create new distribution pathways for documentary filmmakers at risk and audiences living in exile. Our Waves stood out for its community-focused approach to a widely misunderstood social issue, its combination of personal, experimental and participatory filmmaking methods, and its close collaboration with the protagonists, which could lead to broader social impact. Restless Farewell was recognized for its humorous and intimate observations of contemporary labor and migration, as well as its distribution potential across Asia and international circuits.

The Newstapa Award also went to Restless Farewell. The project will receive KRW 10 million in production funding and an opportunity to present a 60-minute cut through the Newstapa Foundation’s channels after completion. The project follows the lives of young workers in precarious employment who have migrated to Shanghai, China’s economic center. It was recognized for its timely subject matter, honest approach grounded in close relationships with its protagonists, and perspective on contemporary Chinese society.
