Program Note
In the beautiful Indian countryside village of Ooty lives mentally handicapped Krishna. He works at a chocolate factory and has lived happily with his daughter Nila since his wife’s death. Nila is very bright and understands her father’s handicap completely, and loves him even when others make fun of him. As fate would have it, the president of Nila’s school, Rajendran, finds out that he is Nila’s grandfather and takes Nila away from Krishna and moves to Chennai. He has never forgiven the mentally handicapped Krishna for taking his daughter away from him. So begins Krishna’s fight to recover his daughter. [God’s Own Child] is divided into two parts. The first half of the film shows how happy and fulfilled Krishna and Nila were in their quiet little town. The latter half deals with the strife between the offense and the defense in the legal battle for Nila’s custody. This is Bollywood movie making at its best, complete with a gargantuan running time, upbeat music, easy humor, and heart-wrenching melodrama. (Jay SOHN)
