Program Note
[MESH (Walking)] deals with lives of Kurds in Turkey and their independence movement against Turkish oppression. The Turkish government once imposed a curfew and employed military forces to destroy the Kurdish independence movement ? a move that amounted to genocide. The film touches on the historical situation through the friendship of protagonist, Cengo, with a mentally disturbed man Xelilo and the oppression on Cengo’s family. One of the film’s most memorable moments comes as Xelilo and Cengo watch a Yilmaz Guney movie and Turkish soldiers break in and shoot the screen. Yilmaz Guney is a famous Kurdish director known for his film Yol. Shiar Abdi repeats the violent images of the history in this scene and announces himself to be Yilmaz Guney’s successor. An inspiring metaphor of how film’s images are formulated and used in society, [MESH (Walking)] is a powerful film about a pressing political issue. (LEE Sang-yong)
