Program Note
After many years apart, a sensitive teen, Libby, is sent to live with her father, Shaul, in Israel. She soon discovers that her father is an irresponsible eccentric who is homeless. He hatches a scheme to pass as refugees to obtain shelter in order to take care of his daughter. Shaul’s masquerade as a ‘refugee’ reminds us of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine as well as the segregation of generations between them. Their wandering brings the two closer together, in sense validating Shaul’s pretense: His lie is a way to fill the gap in their history and to heal the wounds they carry. It is also a means to continue their wandering lives together without being apart. Libby has had a lonely life so far and Shaul has missed his wife and family. The gap between them cannot be filled right away, but this moving story shows us how they overcome it through an ‘off-white’ lie, not quite true not completely false. (LEE Sang-yong)
