Program Note
[Beautiful Miss Jin] is a well-made local film that emphasized the importance of ‘living together.’ The title, of course, is ironic expression of the reality. Miss Jin is certainly not beautiful yet her mind is. She is a homeless herself but helps a girl to survive on the street with her. She seems to be an angel of the streets. Some other low-lives around Busan’s Dongrae station are not much different from her. They seem to be failures in life but their hearts are warm and caring. Even the stationmaster, troubled by their presence, shows sympathy when needed. The point of view that observes their lives is also ironic. Unlike other films of the similar theme, the director does not treat their lives as gloomy and tragic phenomena but describes them as comical amusement without being too superficial. [Beautiful Miss Jin] stands out in that sense that the film reflects understanding and considerate attitude without sympathy or beautification. Their lives are tragic yet they are not viewed as foul creatures thanks to the leveled point of view. (JEON Chanil)
