Program Note
The Taekwondo Club of Manse High school once enjoyed a great reputation. But with its decline, it now faces the threat of extinction. The national tournament is coming up, but all the members are injured due to a big fight with fellow schoolmates. And to make matters worse, a competent coach has left the club. The worried principal comes up with an idea. He proposes to Yong-gaek and his friends, who beat up the club members, that if they join the club and get through the preliminary round, they would be exempt from being expelled from school. They join the club, which recently hired a new coach from a nearby Taekwondo hall. Choong-geun, the new coach, is completely incompetent and the boys are not really into learning Taekwondo at all. Spin Kick has a rather predictable storyline. The deliquents get into all kinds of trouble. And as their dedicated friends come to their rescue, the boys gradually find healthy energy within them. They overcome their internal discord and eventually win the tournament. Although the film has a rather conventional storyline and flat action scenes, the direction devoid of pretense is strangely moving.
