Program Note
Set in Vietnam in 1972 when the end of the Vietnam War is near, a Korean platoon is dispatched to R-Point on a special mission. Their mission is to find the soldiers who have disappeared six months ago, but are still sending rescue signals. R-Point is a sacred area to the Vietnamese where even the Northern Vietnamese avoid to go. All foreign armies dispatched to the area have disappeared. The newly dispatched unit starts a search, but the missing soldiers are nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, strange accidents happen. The film is based on a true story. It is a great achievement in that it depicts the shameful modem history of Korea and the ravages of war through the horror genre. The Vietnam War, in which Korea fought a foreign nation by the request of the U.S., is a total nightmare that Koreans wish to erase completely from their memory. But just when they think they have accomplished this, the nightmare haunts them again. We can′t see where the signals are coming from, but they keep coming. R-Point does not distort history just for the genre′s sake. Rather, the genre is used to remind us of a shameful history. A history which lingers on for Koreans and resonates even louder with R-Point.
