Program Note
Too Many Ways To be No.1 explores how a decision made at any one moment in a person′s life can change its entire course. The film′s two-part structure presents separate situations which initially appear unconnected to one another, save for the presence of Wong Ah-Kau and others around him, who curiously all have completely different personalities in the second part of the film. In the final sequence at a fortune teller′s, however, it all becomes clear, as the two seemingly disparate story lines are knit together to show how Ah-Kau ultimately chooses his own fate with the decisions he makes. Director Wai Ka-Fai cleverly plays with time and images to articulate this rethinking of the idea of "choice." Free-flowing camerawork captures the same moment from different angles in a self-reflexive gambit which formally echoes the theme of choice which runs through the narrative, hinting at the many choices which present themselves to a filmmaker in constructing a film.
