Program Note
Linking three stories together, The Observer’s Journal showcases director Lim Junghwan’s signature knack for balancing tension and humor, while also signaling a shift in his style. Alongside his long-time ‘cinema friends,’ new faces join in to enrich and further enliven this peculiar, expansive world. In particular, Bang Minah and Park Jonghwan traverse time and space, creating a loose yet reliable thread connecting the three tales. If there’s a commonality among characters who change their names, professions, and seemingly become entirely different people, it’s that they all speak of ‘fun.’ One vows never to give up on it, while another insists they simply want to work with joy. Crossing between clumsy fantasies and painful predicaments, the film confesses the joy, doubt, excitement, and loneliness tied to life and creation. Thanks to its effortlessly natural cast, The Observer’s Journal manages to capture—alongside its sudden intrusions of crisis and violence—the slow blooming of affection and the absurd truths that emerge along the way.
