Jairaj and Ratna, famous traditional dancers, are very worried about their daughter Lata′s upcoming debut and also her marriage. Lata′s fiance, Viswas, is a nice young man from a wealthy merchant family but knows nothing about dance. For Lata′s parents, he is like a mirror that reflects the couple′s dark past. The confrontation with Jairaj′s father, who viewed dance as cheap entertainment or something that a prostitute would do, has them fearful that Lata may experience the same hardship. Unlike Bollywood films, the unique style of mixing plot and performance is not to be found in this film. The performance in this film is far more mature and understated than that of Bollywood, and never interferes with story development. The dance of this family can be seen as an emotional gesture that attempts to encapsulate the joy and sorrow of life and reduce the generational gap and confrontations among people with different viewpoints about vocation. In other words, dance is the link that connects the circles and repetition of convention and modernity; past and present; and family and individual. And it also serves as a ritual for wishing good luck. Dance Like a Man, which was originally a play and later adapted for the screen. successfully puts the body language of dance into humorous situations and the memory about a dark family history.
