After working in the US for many years, Pedro returns to Guerrero, Chile, his hometown. It is somewhat awkward to be with his wife and daughters after so many years of separation and while he makes efforts to get closer to his family again, he also follows his dream of starting a band. However, life is not easy and overseas jobs which will separate him from all he loves start calling to him again. Spanish for "here and over there", <Aqui y Alla> takes a downbeat peak into the life of a poor Chilian family, describing the everyday through a structured mise en scene composed of fixed shots. The long sequences and stable rhythm of this film constitute major characteristics of recent Central and South American films where the camera serves as an observer, often focussing more on the landscape than on people's faces. This film depicting the hidden dark side of Latin Americans' dream for U.S. won the Grand Prix at the Semaine de la Critique at Cannes Film Festival. (RHEE, Soue-won)
