An older man recently released from jail after serving his sentence takes a fourteen-year old girl whose face is hidden under a veil as his bride. Their family has arranged this marriage to ward off further bloodbath and settle the ancient feud between the two families. After the wedding ritual, families and friends leave the couple alone for their first night together…
<Night of Silence> is a film that criticizes the contradictions of Turkish marriage customs. A young girl, an almost child-like bride who doesn’t know a thing about marriage, symbolizes the condition of local women who without a question, have to simply conform to the patriarchal traditions. The film includes also a potent statement that women are not the only victims. The director also shows with realistic perspective the awkward position in which the groom finds himself. The film is shot within the limitations of a small room. Camera shows the various angles of their bedroom with these newlyweds haggling in the middle of the night. Finally, the groom’s poignant decision marks the climax of the film. (RHEE, Soue-won)
