Program Note
Thomas lives in the city of Bogota where racism runs rampant. He wanders the streets with his friends and works as an apprentice barber, working on massively intricate hair-dos painstakingly executed with clippers and razor-blades. When his drug addicted younger brother disappears, he sets out to find him and ends up on a journey of self discovery and introspection. La Playa D.C. is directorial debut feature about a Colombian teenager and how he deals with relationships and identity. The camera follows him through the streets, an unsteady observer, helping to accentuate the story′s realism. Hair style, an innovative narrative device, is cleverly used as a bridge between the past and issues of South American slavery, and the present European dream. The "head map", known to have guided slaves from the South American mines and handed down through the generations, serves as a symbol of cultural identity and historical memory, and in this sense, the protagonist’s final choice is quite meaningful.
