Sofia (Carmen Maura) is a woman in her sixties living with her husband Alfred (Gustavo Angarita) in a cold, quiet village in the Andes. She has never seen the sea and has always dreamt of going there. Year after year, Alfred promises to take her to the Caribbean, but their plans are always thwarted by life′s unexpected changes and year after year he puts it off, until finally one day, Sophia decides to go alone, leaving Alfred to face the enormous challenges of living day to day without her. Filled with the bright colors of Latin America, the cheerful tone of this film has a certain joyful, child-like quality to it. Dialog is limited and the main character is rather muted, but the film speaks all the louder for it. Focused on quiet interaction between the characters, the director′s warm gaze upon their world is evident, trailing this couple well past their midlives with an underlying musical score that enchants. Sophia is a charming comedy delivering insight on life, dream and growing old. (RHEE, Soue-won)
