Program Note
Teona Mitevska embraces elements from fairy tales to describe tragic stories of two family in her third movie. The story of the movie, <The Woman Who Brushed off Her Tears>, starts from France to deep in the forest in Macedonia to track its two heroines. One of them, Helena is deeply hurt by the tragic death of her son in Paris. To fill the empty shoes, she makes her all the best to make Lucien, who faces deportation, part of her life. Helena, her husband and Lucien leave for Macedonia to sprinkle ashes of the dead son. Lucien’s girlfriend, Ajsun struggles to gain independence from her father. She has a son between herself and Lucien, but her father, to save Ajsun from dishonorable stigma that she has a child outside of wedlock, sells her over to other man. Ajsun and Helena both face a similar situation that they have to protect themselves in a male-dominant world.
