Program Note
In a village on 17th Century West Africa′s "Slave Coast" the old chief N′Go insists that his son Ossei marry the daughter of a rich family. Unable to be with the girl he truly loves, Ossei leaves the village. That night, his village is burned and pillaged. Many are killed or taken prisoner. It is not the European slave traders who committed the massacre, but neighboring Amazon warriors under the tyrant Adanggaman. When Ossei returns to his destroyed village, he discovers that his father and girlfriend have been killed. He rushes to search for his missing mother Mo Akassi. Ossei catches up with the captured villagers led by the cruel Amazons enroute to Adanggaman′s kingdom. Ossei tries in vain to rescue his mother and is wounded. He is captured, manacled and beaten. His only hope is Naka, a striking woman who′s drawn to him despite her loyalty to the king.
