After the Arab Spring, director Manuele LABIDI emerged as one of the notable new directors this year with Arab Blues, a realistic yet humorous depiction of Tunisian society in transition, was invited to the Venice, Toronto and BFI London Film Festival in succession. With the ouster of dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali, Selma, a psychoanalyst returns to her hometown of Tunisia after a decade in Paris. Although the second floor of the house is renovated to open a psychiatric clinic, a series of not-so-funny difficulties occur from the first day, and a female warrior Selma’s lonely struggle begins. Manele LABIDI is a French-Tunisian writer-director. She studied politics and worked in finance for a few years before writing for theatre and radio. Arab Blues(2019), A Room of My Own(2018).
