Program Note
Growing up in a small seaside village, teenager Rosina has an awkward body, taciturn character, mean sister and no friends. While the village is buzzing with rumors of shark appearance, and her parents are trying to salvage their failing economic situation, Rosina experiences an unfamiliar impulse: sexual desire for a man. First-time director Lucía GARIBALDI teams up with newcomer actress Romina BENTANCUR in this funny little coming-of-age story. No one pays attention to Rosina, but beneath her cool and indifferent surface, there is a strong craving for violence and lust on the brink of overflow. Watching Rosina’s multiple failed attempts to draw interest from her object of obsession, one can easily identify with the hurt-but-pretending-not-to-hurt moments. In this sense, the ending is liberating, but also sorrowful as loss of innocence is evident when she flashes a sly smile after turning her back away from the beautiful ocean. (Karen Park)
