Program Note
Jung Jae-Wan, who is handicapped with cerebral infantile paralysis, spends his days selling all sorts of trinkets on the street. His life is difficult, filled with loneliness and economic hardship. To escape from this reality he visits the market to watch the lives of ordinary folks and seeks a world different from his own by visiting art galleries in Insa-dong. He struggles to come out from his solitary life. The Landscape may seem like a human-interest documentary filmed in a socially conscious manner, however the single most important aspect of this film is the escape from such conventions. The director rejects intentional scenes, and depicts a four year in the life of a handicapped person as if in scenery. The camera moves as he moves, and the camera looks at the world as he looks at the world. (Kim Seong-Uk)
