Program Note
In almost every society in the world lies the belief that the birth of a child is the zenith of womanhood, and that all women naturally embrace inborn maternal instincts. In Emily Atef’s assured drama, Rebecca and Julian experience the joy of impending parenthood until after their son is born. Struggling with feelings of helplessness and failure on her own, Rebecca spirals into a cycle of depression, resisting any connection to her child. Her inability to be a mother puts a strain on her relationship with Julian that comes to a head when she has a complete breakdown. Atef’s exploration of the idealized mother image looks at one woman’s journey to find that mother within her, and it is also “a love story about two people, who’ve become strangers but, as a result of this crisis, end up growing closer than they’ve ever been.”
