Program Note
This is a fictional drama and documentary about people who are trying to restore Jeonju Sago on Hanji paper, the only remaining annals of the Joseon Dynasty that were burned during Imjin-Waeran. The film crosses over between fiction and documentary and its dramatic rhythm flows in strolling pace sometimes and strides in full speed at other times. From [Sopyonje[, [Strokes of Fire] to [Beyond the Years] Im Kwon-taek’s affection and interest for the subject of Korean artistry and craftsmanship stretches out further in the film. Personalization of characters and the tension and conflict among them are worth watching. Especially the ensemble performance of Park Joong-hoon, Kang Soo-youn, and Yeh Ji-won is flawless in harmony. [Hanji] is a film about ‘process’ rather than ‘result’. The ending stands out with the craftsmanship of the director himself. Dramatic effect would be expected in the way that the [Hanji] is perfected for witnessing eyes of viewers yet the director refuses such fictional effects and leaves an open ending. The history will tell of [Hanji] as one of master’s most important works. (JEON Chanil)
