Program Note
One hot summer night, Tae-jeong receives a phone call from his middle school friend, Seung young, who was under his command during his military service. When Tae-jeong meets Seung young, however, it seems like he feels uncomfortable with Seung-young. During their military service, Tae-jeong, who had been Seong-young′s middle school classmate, took care of Seoung young who could not adapt himself to the army where nothing but order and obedience existed. After Tae-jeong was discharged, Seung-young started to change with no one to protect him. This film seems to be voice critical comments on military culture or the military organization, but it is not satisfied with this. Rather it is the result of the deep observation into the human relationship intruded by unstable and ambiguous desire. There is no normative distance between three protagonists at any moment. The forced norms, the conventional courtesies, and general morals crossing the homosexual urges drive their relationship into rupture. Although dialogue is minimized and the cinematography is simplified, the direction which creates tension between the characters in every frame is splendid, and the editing which maximizes the mysterious effect is excellent. The best independent feature film of the year. (Huh Moon-yung)
