Program Note
In a movie theater, a man is murdered. The victim’s step-son, Xu Feng, is placed on the list of suspects, but leaves town after being acquitted. A decade after, Detective Chen encounters Wang Dong, a famous doctor wearing a mask, and recalls the murder case that happened ten years earlier. While chasing the case again, Chen faces a shocking truth. Ten years before, while reading Tolstoy’s Resurrection, Xu Feng, abused by his step-father, sent a letter to Wang Dong, a medical student. Wang Dong loved Xuanhui, but she was with a wealthy artist, and having a child with him. Feeling empathy for each other’s tragic fates, Xu Feng and Wang Dong exchanged murders by killing each other’s enemy. Ten years later, Wang Dong, who got married to Xuanhui and became rich, is reunited with Xu Feng. Would they find happiness and rest by escaping their fates? The young Chinese director Li Xiaofeng reveals the essence of greed and violence lurking beneath the surface of Chinese society through the twisted desires and murders committed by the young men.
