Program Note
This movie is adapted from the chivalry cartoon by Samura Hiroaki, Blade of the Immortal, which has joined the ranks of classics in the field. This movie received attention for the fact that it is Miike Takashi’s 100th movie. While the main character, Manji, exterminates the Samurais who killed his brother, he is injured and hovers between life and death. One day, he has a bloodworm transplant, getting an immortal body. While living in seclusion for 50 years, a girl named Rin visits him to ask for help avenging her parents. Manji accepts her request. To carry out the revenge on swordsman Anotsu, he has to defeat the highly trained Samurais one by one. Director Miike, in a film as fascinating as the original cartoon, fully shows his merits using grotesque and provocative scenes, splendid costumes, refined production design, and fantastic state-of-the-art weaponry. Another charm is the screen compositions and the dialogue influenced by the source material. Kimura Takuya plays the main character Manji, and rising new actress Sugisaki Hana plays Rin, entering into Miike Takashi’s world. (KIM Young-woo)
