Tomo is a young girl living with her irresponsible mother. When her mother suddenly leaves one day Tomo goes to stay with her uncle Makio. At uncle’s house, Tomo happens to meet a transgender lady, Rinko. Since Rinko is caring and warm, Tomo gradually opens her mind, and Tomo, uncle Makio, and Rinko become a new family. This time, director Ogigami Naoko, who has warmly depicted the lives of ordinary people, deals with the issue of gender identity on a larger scale, addressing the possibility of a non-traditional family arrangement. This movie does not suggest a simple happy ending. Nor does it ignore Hiromi (Tomo’s mother)’s suffering, who also has a lot of troubles like the others, thus leaving the door open for possibilities. The knitting, frequently repeated in the movie, is a metaphor for the healing of Rinko’s wounds, the mourning for what she has lost and a warm celebration of the new body and identity she has gained. The knitting with pastel tone wool also symbolizes the bond connecting the characters in the movie. (HONG Soin)
