Program Note
Living in Italy, Shadi returns to his Palestinian hometown to attend his sister’s wedding. The film is the story of a day during which Shadi and his father, Abu Shadi, distribute wedding invitations from door to door, true to the tradition in Nazareth. The two men, who usually don’t talk much to each other, now have no choice but to stay in one space. Following the father and son going through narrow alleys, the camera catches their awkward silences, small conflicts and subtle changes in their emotions. The film also suggests Palestine’s political situation. Instead of depicting the situation in a big incident, the story expresses it through tensions, threats and conflicts faced by individuals in daily life. The crown jewel of this approach is the moment when the two men’s conflict explodes. Just like Abu Shadi’s car turns round and round along a rotary, life is not that simple. By the time they understand this, they finally understand each other. (HONG Soin)
