Program Note
Often in the work of Bong Joon Ho, an incident, a monster, or a person wreaks havoc and creates cracks in the system. In Memories of Murder, the serial killer reveals the stark reality of Korean society in the 80s. In The Host, the monster creates an uproar in which America and Korea, perpetrator and victims, government and people are intertwined in big mess. In Snowpiercer, the train carriages separate rich from poor, but a collision is inevitable, for it’s a Bong Joon Ho’s film. In Okja, the modern meateating system of mass production and heavy consumption is criticized. Mirando, a global corporation, announces that a new breed of super-pigs is being developed, claiming that they can solve the world’s food shortage problems. To that end, Mirando distributes 26 baby super-pigs to be raised by farmers in different countries around the world, before the best pig is selected. Okja, one of the super pigs, is sent to Korea. After growing up together in the hills for 10 years, Okja and Mija, a young girl, are inseparable. When she learns that, far different from what Mirando says publically, Okja faces a horrible fate through the company’s wicked plot, Mija ventures out to save her pig. (NAM Dong-chul)
