Program Note
Set in the 1980s in Gunsan around a US military camptown, 15 years old Sangguk is the son of a photo studio owner. As prostitution prevails in the town, Sangguk is curious about the opposite sex. One day he takes pictures of Youngrim, a prostitute who visits the photo studio. As they get closer, Sangguk sleeps with Youngrim one night and gets a venereal disease. He keeps visiting her place to see her, but she forbids him any further visits. She is exploited by the business that manages the women in the basecamp. Meanwhile the police force Sangguk to tell them who made him infected. Far from romantic, the boy’s love, based on sexual curiosity, gets him into a situation where he has to report Youngrim, leaving him indelibly guilty and wounded. Director Jeon Sooil shows that it’s not a mere individual matter but a lingering and shameful facet of the history of modern Korea. The film reveals how sex workers in US military camptowns were driven into a dead zone void of human rights. (NAM Dong-chul)
