Program Note
Pierre Tardieu, a day laborer, lives with his sick father. Reminiscing about his childhood with his mother on the beach, he can’t free himself from her. Murdering someone becomes the only way of realizing his existence. One day, he meets a pianist called Laure in a bookstore and falls in love with her. Set in Toulouse, France, the film boasts effective space arrangement and great performances. In particular, it successfully expresses the contrast between the dark night scenes and the bright day scenes. The story depicts the main character not as a villain but as an invisible murderer. Keeping itself from sensationalism, the film focuses on the unfortunate murderer’s entangled psyche. Excluded from society, Pierre realizes his existence only when he looks into the eyes of his victims. Tired of his invisibility, he engages in a shooting spree, expressing his anger for society and his despair. Such frustration reaches its peak at the end. This is the first feature directed by Eric Cherriere, a French crime fiction writer and documentary filmmaker. (RHEE Soue-won)
