Program Note
Czechoslovakia, 1980. Anna, a young and talented athlete, is training for the Olympic Games. To maximize her stats, her coach and doctor talk to Anna’s mother and secretly prescribe an anabolic steroid for Anna. Getting an injection every night, Anna finally realizes the truth and refuses the shots. Consequently, her records aren’t as good as before. Meanwhile, since Anna’s father went into exile in the West, her mother has suffered all kinds of disadvantages with the government keeping a close eye on her. Believing that Anna’s participation in the Olympics is the only way to break free from behind the Iron Curtain, her mother provides Anna with steroid injections again, telling her that it is vitamin. Fair Play depicts how the ideological conflict of the Cold War can be linked to corruption in the sports arena. The athletes who are forced to rely on doping clearly explain how the Olympic spirit could also become corrupted. With its first and last scenes of jogging, this fascinating story asks us the meaning of unshakable sportsmanship and “fair play.” (RHEE Soue-won)
