Program Note
Sergey must adapt to the surprisingly well organized and hierarchical world of violence in his new dormitory school for the deaf. As he advances in the school’s organization, he meets Anna the prostitute, and this encounter results in him breaking all the rules in his new world. The film is entirely in sign language. According to the director, The Tribe is a homage to the silent film. It is truly remarkable that it is not hard to understand even though there is no dialogue. The plot itself is not complicated. There is no need to rely on the symbolism behind dialogue. It is action packed, and most close-ups and expressions of inner emotions have been eliminated. The focus is rather on the explicit portrayal of the rank and power within the dormitory school. Above all, we are faced with the dark side of the school, also called “a prison.” It was the winner of the Nespresso Grand Prize at the Cannes International Critics’ Week, as well as the talk of Eastern Europe. The new director’s courage to experiment certainly deserves merit. (RHEE Soue-won)
