Program Note
On his way to Europe across the Sahara Desert, Cameroonian Leonard meets Hope, a girl from Nigeria who has been raped. Just before entering Europe, there are several “ghettos” formed by different African nations. When they enter a Cameroon ghetto, they are forced to marry in accordance to its rules. Leonard is then able to make the money needed to enter Europe illegally through prostituting Hope. This is the not first time a film has been made about the illegal immigration of Africans into Europe. Hope, however, is different. It brings to the fore new aspects of this process ? the violence and crime of the “ghettos”; the law of the jungle that developed there. As expected of a documentarian, the director strictly and realistically portrays the dark side of reality. He also brings out the subtle moments in which the two main characters, who had hardly spoken to each other, start to fall in love. The raw acting of the two amateur actors is also very impressive.
