Twelve-year-old Kevin, raised by a single mother, goes to the hospital regularly for aquatic therapy in an effort to lose weight, but has no luck. Despite being the target of abuse by his fellow students, he is unable to resist fatty foods. Life changes for him when he sees a security guard with a dog, whom he believes to be a commando that he takes as his role model. The film focuses on the minorities of today’s society. An obese child who gets bullied on, another overweight child who tries to commit suicide, a child subjected to racism, a child of a divorced family, and even the security guards Kevin looks up to are no exception. Chubby is a touching film portraying the realities of discrimination that exists for such groups of people, intentionally or not, with a touch of wit and humor. Despite his hardships, Kevin’s innocence, heartwarming attitude and support of those around him makes this film all the more uplifting, leaving a smile behind. (RHEE Soue-won)
