Program Note
Five teens in ritzy, touristy Corsica spend a night partying in an unoccupied villa, leaving in the morning with two antique rifles. When the owner returns and tells the local mob boss about the theft, it kicks off a disastrous and tragic chain of events. Apaches, Thierry de Peretti’s first feature, is a coming-of-age film revealing the dark side of touristy Corsica. Adolescence is characterized by clumsiness and immaturity. During this period of life, nobody knows when the fragile balance will be broken. The film delicately expresses this period as shining with the beauty of recklessness. It is heart wrenching to see ordinary teens’ lives become entangled in the chain of violence and crime and meet a disastrous end. This film, which premiered during the Directors’ Fortnight of the Cannes Film Festival, is a portrait of Corsican teens that were born to undergo severe pain and to wither before blooming.
