Overwhelmed by debt, telecom engineer Dimitris closes his business right before becoming embroiled in an amateur phone hacking investigation with a former colleague. The search leads Dimitris to a woman living in a suspicious apartment, and gives rise to a moral dilemma and personal reflection. In Wild Duck, the combination of piano tunes and a desolate landscape generates a unique and affecting aesthetic. The dilemma of modern Greek society, which is facing an unprecedented crisis, forms the basis of the film. The main character is an ordinary citizen who doesn’t harm anyone and calmly concentrates on his work like a “wild duck”. Everywhere he goes, the content of wiretapping follows him and this reflects the pang of conscience that dominates his inner world. What is also notable is that the synecdochical use of the camera focusing on body parts like the face and hands often strengthens the overall reflective atmosphere of the film, along with silence. This wonderful film, Yannis Sakaridis’ first feature, shows that the director made great efforts to maximize its visual effects and it is worth paying attention to. (RHEE Soue-won)
