Program Note
From September 1999 to March 2000, the World Cup Stadium was built in Sangam-dong. This documentary is about the struggle of the residents who were ordered to leave their homes. The film depicts a fight between family members rather than that of the Evacuation Countermeasure Committee, and this makes the audience feel as if they’re witnessing the struggle of a man stripped of his basic rights. A couple’s lonely demonstration in front of the City Hall and their daughter and her husband who are jailed for violating the Law on Assembly and Demonstration. For this family whose only wish was to live their life as truthfully as possible, it is hard to accept that their lives may mean nothing when faced with the power if an uncaring government. And from their struggle, we find out that in this world reason may not mean much at all, and that reality is something that cannot be overcome with only idealism and optimism as sword and shield. Early in the film the couple insists that even if the government succeeds in demolishing the district, they will never be able to evacuate the residents. However, in the end the couple says that the government can indeed evacuate the residents as well. (Hong Hyosook)
