Sound of Brasil is a musical road movie, a captivating and passionate documentary about the many styles of Brazilian music. In Sound of Brasil, Kaurismaki embarks on a musical journey of 4,000 kilometers. On his way he stops at Pernambuco, Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, three Brazilian states that symbolise various music styles: frevo, maracatu, coco, embolada, forro and samba. Sound of Brasil is Kaurismaki’s account of the journey. More than ten years ago he discovered a home away from home in Brazil and he found the richness of Brazilian music fascinating. Kaurismaki focuses on street music, conveying the authenticity and zest for living amongst the people of his second home country. Brazilian music is as multicultural as the influences that have affected the country from the beginning of colonization more than 500 years ago. The variety of musical styles, instruments and rhythms of this vast country reflect both the indigenous South American origins and the varying cultural traditions of African and European immigrants.
