Program Note
After the mysterious death of Marcela, her mother and four brothers leave for a remote rural village for healing. Nevertheless, rural life is far from peaceful. The appearance of Angelica, the mother's sister, subtly influences the brothers and amidst a nightmare-like madness, their destiny comes to an unpredictable boiling point. This film is a "cold fairy tale", full of mystery and taboos. With a unique rhythm led by mysterious narration, slow motion and camerawork, the first sequence serves as a prologue, announcing the entrance into this tragic fable. This atmosphere is colored by the theme of incest dominating the entire film and the existence of the gruesome young twins who seem to secretly perceive everything. The use of sound is also sophisticated and unique. In particular, the sharp sound of string instruments that accompany the scene in which the twins listen to the fairy tale read by their aunt on a rainy night and then put what they hear into practice. This is the director's first feature film and at no point loses its tension towards its shocking conclusion. (RHEE, Soue-won)
