Program Note
The City of Munich rents out an old building called Annelie as a welfare facility. This facility shelters the socially excluded, including the homeless and drug addicts. One day, the city decides to demolish the building and everyone gathers together to protect Annelie, to surrealistic results. <Annelie> is a high-quality film with a unique rhythm, describing the life of the socially excluded. The opening scene in which unimaginable characters appear one by one is already out of the ordinary. The film, which respects and shows affection for their world, is full of humanism. On the other hand, it avoids the trap of sentimentalism as well, through the use of speedy editing, frequent jump cuts and dynamic angles. The music that dominates the entire film draws in the attention, in particular, electronic music matches the almost festive spirit of the scenes it accompanies in which the characters throw and smash furniture in the front yard. What is notable about this film is that it tells the truth of life, free from any criticism or explanation. (RHEE, Soue-won)
