Program Note
Aicha is a young woman of 18 who must stay in Djerba while her husband, Said, works eleven months of the year in Tunis. Aicha expresses her desire to leave for Tunis. The brave and bold young woman proposes to weave carpets in order to earn enough money to make her dream come true. Said imposes one condition: she must have a son. Aicha shares her dreams with other women in the village. Each time the men return from Tunis is a pretext for celebration. The women experience the joy of applying henna, bathing, and laughing. Then as years go by, Aicha and the other women become disillusioned. Aicha gives birth to two daughters. The birth of her son Aziz brings the dream closer to life. But this much-awaited son bears his mother′s heartbreak. Years later, Aicha returns with Aziz, her daughters, and her friend Zeineb, to Djerba to understand the past and retrieve trust, peace and serenity.
