Program Note
In a city somewhere in the far north, a strange series of events take place: a clerk is made redundant in a degrading manner, a lost immigrant is violently attacked in a busy street, and a magician makes an error in his act. In the midst of this mayhem one person stands out: Karl. Covered in soot from the fire he has lit to burn down his furniture store in an insurance scam, he is the nexus of this postmodern commentary. Sleep this night does not come easily to the citizens of this town. The following day the signs of chaos are taking hold as the madness grips a board of directors and the city itself is strangled by a horrendous traffic jam. Whilst the new millennium is casting its web and creating a vast mental breakdown, Karl gradually becomes conscious of the absurdity of the world and realizes just how difficult it is to be human...

Roy Andersson
Born in Sweden in 1943, Andersson studied literature then film, graduating from the Swedish Film Institute. In 1970 he completed his first feature A Swedish Love Story, which won the Grand Prix at the Berlin Film Festival. In 1981, he founded Studio 24, an independent production company based in Stockholm, which has allowed him to make his films in total freedom and thus affords him a unique position in the film industry.
