Kang Woo-Suk is a director and executive producer who has led the mainstream of Korean commercial cinema with films noted for their humorous situations and dialogue. His comedies have enabled Korean audiences to rediscover the humor of Korean films. True to form, Kang approaches social issues with parody and irony in Bedroom & Courtroom. Kang uses sex as a metaphor for the economic crisis which has called for IMF relief funds. When Hyung-Do, a corporate employee is in danger of losing his job despite loyalty to the company for over 12 years, his wife Kyung-Ja files a lawsuit against the company. She blames the company for overworking her husband who neglected the family. Married to each other and both lawyers, Kija and Sunggi respectively represent Kyung-Ja and the Hyung-Do′s company in the courtroom battle that ensues. The courtroom functions as an interesting space in this film where the most private problems are turned to public issues. It is a place where the rational is substituted by words considered taboo, and where social tensions are subverted. The rather dramatic ending and direct parody are shortcomings but the performance of Korea′s leading actors, and witty dialogue is entertaining in itself. (Lim Kyung-Hun)
