Program Note
While house-sitting for Ji-Hyun, her sister who is away visiting America, Seo-Hyun becomes entangled in a fateful love affair with her sister′s fiancee, Woo-In. Feeling hemmed in by the routine and monotony of married life, she is attracted to his liberal attitude toward life. As their daily meetings continue, their feelings deepen for each other. Although they are in love, the conventions of social morality prevent them from being together. While the film is minimalist in its use of space, it goes beyond the conventions of melodrama as the emotions of the characters are driven to the limit. The film avoids romanticizing or eroticizing the issue of sexual misconduct, and instead focuses on the shifting dynamics of the relationships between the characters. When Ji-Hyun returns and her husband goes away on a business trip, Seo-Hyun finds it even more difficult to resolve anything. The director stands at a rational distance and refuses to condemn or embrace their actions, but in the end, is able to draw out a frankness and sincerity of emotion that seem to have been rejected in this age of modernity.
