Program Note
An unlucky criminal, a suicidal young man, and two seemingly foolish convicts compose the motley crew of men who get entangled in a serial murder case. In contrast, the police officers after these suspects consider themselves to be veteran professionals. As the story progresses, however, their "by the look" investigation exposes their own inexperience. How and why these four individuals become suspects and the ensuing investigation are the driving forces in the humor of Director Jang Jin′s commercial debut. With an air of comedy, this film characterizes the serious state of where Korean men are situated in society, as depicted when these four characters run toward the camera in front of the national flag. Jang Jin′s acute freshness in storytelling is supported by not casting stars (as is the rule of commercial films), and by his use of theatrical conventions and the sensations of language. Although there somethings are rough connections in the development of the story, this film′s fresh and imaginative humor and overall appearance will give this rising filmmaker applause from the audience.
