Program Note
In late 2021 as Belarus sends refugees from the Middle East to neighboring Poland, soldiers from both countries clash and refugees find themselves caught in the middle of a lushly forested border zone. Agnieszka Holland’s latest film, Green Border, takes a documentary approach based on thorough research, suggesting that sometimes reality can be stranger than fiction. “I don’t make movies to deliver a political message, but every aspect of our world is political,” said the director, and each character in the film makes political judgments based on his or her own position. The different perspectives from the refugees who are bewildered in the ever-changing jungle of geopolitics, the human rights organizations trying to help them, the locals fearing them but unable to turn away, and the border guards trying to keep them out, make us reflect on the faint line between good and evil as we make choices. In the short epilogue at the end of the film, we see a very different scene at another border in Poland, just a year later. (Karen PARK)
