Program Note
Eureka starring Viggo Mortensen begins as a black-and-white Western. However, the screen soon transitions to color, and from the perspective of a police officer, we are confront the daily lives and the suffering of the indigenous people living in the Dakota Reserve, whose land and culture have been stripped away. To break this curse, the girl who lives with the policeman will reconnect with her ancestors and their shamanism. Seeking out her grandfather, who practices magic to transform people, the girl undergoes her own transformation into a ‘bird.’ The bird flies to South America only to see, not the present moment, but the oppression of Native Americans by Western gold miners in the 1970s. The magical realism film Eureka, reminiscent of Gabriel García Márquez novels, is a captivating political film.
