Program Note
The Old Oak is the story of a village in the Northeast of England, where the mine, the villages main source of employment, has closed, and people feel deserted by the system. Many young villagers have left and what was once a thriving, proud community struggles to keep old values alive. But there is growing anger and resentment, and a lack of hope. Houses are cheap and available. This makes it an ideal location for the Syrian refugees who have been accepted by Britain in recent years. How will the Syrians be received? And what will be the future for the last remaining pub in the village, The Old Oak? The Old Oak is the twenty-sixth feature film from the British master filmmaker, Ken Loach. It is a drama that deals with a social issue but its main focus is about personal relationships of ordinary people. The Old Oak is another masterpiece to remind you of that Ken Loach is the filmmaker always standing up for the people whose voices weren’t allowed to be heard.
