Program Note
Disaster reveals the society′s hidden face. It is, therefore, an effective device to show social problems with its story where characters must run for survival. Sinkhole shows where Korean disaster movies are currently situated. Dongwon (Kim Sung-kyun) manages to buy a house in Seoul after 11 years since he moved into the city. However, he gets into fight with a neighbor Mansoo (Cha Seoung-won) from the very first day at his new place. A little later, an enormous sinkhole is created in the middle of the city. It gulps a small apartment building a whole down to 500meters deep underground from where people struggle to escape. The film brilliantly uses the images of the rise and fall that link to the real estate issues in Korea and the desperate disaster in contrast. It is colorfully full of laughter, spectacle, social issues that can be shared, and touching moments in its limited running time. Its creativity that humorously develops the sensitive story adds more fun to it. (SONG Kyung-won)
