Program Note
As members of the wealthy Ullich family gather at the family mansion, their deceased ancestors resurrect one by one. Through swirling secrets, lies, and immorality, this family gathering turns into a tumult of murder and surprise. The film constructs a story of comedy, history, and investigation, where even death doesn’t mean the end. This first feature by Virgil WIDRICH, known for the Oscar-nominated short film Copy Shop, highlights the director’s talent in telling hidden family history in a unique way by combining it with the ghost of the past: Nazism. The story starts off warning right-wing extremism. Yet, when the deceased return and the past becomes the present, it turns into a detective story and black comedy uncovering the family secret. All scenes in the mansion are realized through digital technology, fitting well with the unrealistic colorful world where ancestral ghosts appear. Finally, this commotion of intergenerational family members reveals the dirty laundry of the family. Herman, the only member absent, becomes the metaphor for an unliquidated past. A work that summons the memories of the past that are still effective today.(RHEE Souewon)
